OpenAthens is an authentication service that allows NOAA staff to access the NOAA Library’s electronic resources such as journals, articles, and Ebooks.
OpenAthens is integrated with NOAA's Single-Sign-On and requires that you sign in with your NOAA username and password credentials.
OpenAthens is replacing NOAA Library’s primary form of authentication, IP authentication. For OpenAthens enabled resources you will no longer be required to be on a NOAA provided VPN while working remotely or in a NOAA office or lab to access such resources.
If your IT department requires the use of an Authenticator app or YubiKey when using personal devices, you will need to use it when accessing NOAA's OpenAthens enabled resources on your personal devices.
When you click on any of the library's on any of the NOAA Library's OpenAthens enabled resources, you will be prompted to login.

OpenAthens will improve access in the following ways:
Access via Library Catalog:
Electronic resources that are enabled within OpenAthens in the library catalog will have the following note of being an NOAA Single-Sign-On Required. All other electronic resources require that you continue to use IP authentication to access, requiring that you are either on a NOAA provided VPN while working remotely or in a NOAA office or lab to access such resources.
OpenAthens enabled resources are marked are in the resources note field.
Access via Library A-Z Database:
After choosing any OpenAthens enabled resource on the Library A-Z list you are prompted to select NOAA Single Sign On (SSO) or Library catalog (username and password). You should select SSO.
OpenAthens enabled resources are labeled are in the Library's A-Z Database list with an OpenAthens icon.
Access via Publisher Websites:
For OpenAthens enabled resources, NOAA Staff can access NOAA Library electronic resources directly from the publisher websites. Publisher site’s will vary, but in general you will login using their site's Institutional Login. Through this login method, you will search for NOAA Library when prompted to search for select your affiliated organization.
