Research Organization Registry (ROR) identifiers are globally unique, stable, discoverable, and resolvable identifiers for research organizations. ROR IDs store metadata about organizations such as alternate names/abbreviations, external URLs, and other identifiers, such as Wikidata, ISNI, and the Open Funder Registry (Funder IDs) to support interoperability.
ROR IDs are for high-level organizations that researchers cite as an affiliation or funder in published research. These organizations must be associated with research outputs including organizations that conduct, fund, manage, or publish research outputs such as colleges and universities, private research firms, government agencies, funders, hospitals, and Laboratories.
The NOAA Library has an established working relationship with ROR and maintains all active RORs for NOAA's Offices and Programs. You can view the current list via Google Sheets. If you would like to request a ROR be established for your office please use our request form. Please do not make ROR requests directly to ROR. ROR will not review any NOAA requests unless they come from the NOAA Library.
Please note that at this time ORCID and ROR support a 3-level organizational hierarchy. NOAA Leadership has approved the 3-tier hierarchy and the format should follow:
For example: (1) NOAA, (2) Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research, (3) Weather Program Office.
Below is an example of how ORCID utilizes RORs to correctly affiliate researchers with the correct organization.
